How To Create A Sacred Space in Your Home | 4 Easy Steps

Creating a sacred space is such a simple yet powerful act. Whether you’re religious, non-religious, or anything in between, a sacred space can help you pause, unplug, and reflect on the only work that really matters: loving the world, practicing gratitude, and being kind to both yourself & others.

Having a designated space in your home for meditation, or private reflection can be a constant reminder of how important it is to cultivate this sense of awe and wonder in your life. A space that acts as an invitation to the universe to support you.

Our primary sacred space is a place within and we can tune inwards at any time to feel connected to our own True Self. However, there is something so nurturing, calming, and simply sacred about having a physical altar.

It can be as small as a window ledge or as big as a whole room. Even if you're only able to spend 10 seconds with it every day, having a space for quiet reflection in your home is a reminder to check in with yourself.

It can be useful to set an intention before creating your space. What are you seeking to add to your life by setting this space apart in your home? What do you hope to do in this space? Are there any deities you’d like to honor here? Is it something you see yourself using everyday, or just on important & sacred days/anniversaries?

Personally, I love to fill my space with candles, crystals, essential oils, palo santo, zen music, a comfy pillow, and light blanket. I also keep a few tarot decks nearby in case of an impromptu reading.

The foundation of your altar can be anything from a small table, platform, tray, piece of fabric or yoga mat on the floor.

The next step is to find a peaceful and uncluttered area in your home. A space that allows you to relax, unwind, and tune inwards. A space where you won’t be startled by someone entering or exiting a room.

If free space in your home is limited, it's time to get creative! Locate corners of your home that aren’t being used. You can make this corner your own sacred space by simply adding a billowy curtain and your favorite chair or a pillow.  You can also utilize a bookshelf, windowsill (see below), or the top of a dresser.

The items you place in your space don’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Oprah Winfrey’s meditation space has just three candles and a few inspirational books.

Adorn your altar based on your own beliefs, traditions, inspiration and intentions. Choose objects that personally connect you to your inner higher Self and remind you of Divinity.

Mementos: personal items that are meaningful.
Visual art: your own, your friends', famous works.
Photographs of loved ones and special places.
Statuary: traditional symbols of divine and protective energies.
Crystals: High vibrational and protection.
Scents: candles, incense, & aromatherapy blends.
Stones that hold memories from special places.
Color, light, texture, fabrics, carpets, mirrors, fountains, chimes.
Earth: Plants, flowers and other living things.
Music: musical instruments and favorite calming music or ambient music.
Personal divination tools such as The Tarot, the Runes. Sacred books or words

As you are preparing your space to be clean, clear and high vibrational, remember to always stay in the light. Always make sure you are clear, centered, grounded and protected before commencing spiritual work.

There are many visualization tools you can use, as well as protective crystals such as black obsidian and tourmaline. You can also call upon Archangel Michael for the highest protection.

Spend time in your space every day — whether it’s for 10 seconds before you rush out the door in the morning, or for a relaxed 20 minute evening meditation.

It's about drawing yourself inward and getting closer to what's in your heart

Allow your space to evolve over time. Find more things to place in it and clear out items that aren’t as useful to you anymore. Create new rituals and intentions for it as your own spiritual practice grows.

Your sacred space is a perfect place to ask for guidance, connect with the divine, do yoga, practice deep breathing and create a positive vision for your life. As you refocus on your inner life, you’ll find yourself calmer, clearer, happier and more inspired to follow your heart.

The possibilities for your altar creation are endless— use your intuition and listen to your heart when designing your own unique sacred space!
